Sue Vann, Dock Master
To say that I am a nautical fanatic would be an understatement. I’ve been on the water all my life and have lived on Pleasure Island for a quarter of a century. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I have a daughter, Sunnie, who is a Firefighter/EMT at Wrightsville Beach and a son, Saylor, who is a student at Eugene Ashley High School. My passions include anything involving Joyner Marina and the waters surrounding this island.
Capt. Tim Nichols
Captain Nichols had 6 years of experience in the United States Coast Guard before bringing his skills to the civilian world. As a U. S. Coast Guard Coxswain and Boarding Officer, he has over 5,000 underway hours as a boat Coxswain, specifically doing Homeland Security and Search and Rescue. Not only has Tim completed over 250 Search and Rescue cases, he has been a team leader in more than a thousand law enforcement boardings all over the United States and Caribbean. He is a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Master Captain and PADI certified diver with over 12 years experience. Not only is boating a great passion of his, Tim is an expert in safety, seamanship, and marine maintenance and upkeep.
Travis Oldham
"I moved to Carolina Beach from Tennessee thirteen years ago. While working at Joyner marina, I am getting my Associates Degree at Cape Fear Community College, as well as taking Boat Building classes. Some of my hobbies are surfing, kayaking, camping, hiking in the mountains and playing other sports, but I always love just being out on the water."
Jessa Batson
"I have been working at Joyner Marina for more than a year. I was born and raised in Carolina Beach and most of my family is involved in charter boat fishing. I am a student at UNC- Wilmington. Fishing and all activities on the water are the things I enjoy most."
Jonathan Lanier
"I grew up in Carolina Beach and have lived here for 18 years. I am a volunteer firefighter for the town of Carolina Beach and I enjoy fishing in my spare time. "
Adam Moore
"I have lived in Carolina Beach for 21 years. I enjoy fishing when I am not working. I've been working at Joyner Marina for one year and have a lot of local knowledge of the waters. I can usually tell you what's biting, and where."
Saylor Vann
"I have lived on Pleasure Island all my life and enjoy my time working and sharing local knowledge at Joyner Marina. When I'm not working or in school I can be found surfing, sailing, wake- boarding, fishing or riding my mountain bike."
The Marina Page - A note from the Dockmaster
Having watched the original development of this marina more than two decades ago, it would be an understatement to say that I am thrilled to be a part of its re-birth. I must admit that it was bittersweet for me to watch the old docks and finger-piers being torn apart and hauled away. But as soon as the new bulkhead started going in, I got excited.
I have been on-site and watched the progression of this project every step of the way. Seeing the gradual transformation from the old Oceana Marina to the new state-of-the-art, Joyner Marina has been nothing short of incredible. The contractors and different trades that have been involved have been artists at work, each with their own unique contribution. It has truly been a professionally orchestrated operation.
It is with great pride that I announce we are now ready to bring boats into the new slips inside the basin. The docks have been constructed of a Brazilian hardwood called Cumaru and are absolutely beautiful. The new ships’ store is open and you’ll be impressed with our selection of items of necessity or just pure desire. We have new washers and dryers, hot showers and I give you my personal guarantee that you will always find our facilities clean and well maintained.
I can’t say enough about our dockhands. I call them the “Dream Team“. Each of them is friendly and professional. They have knowledge of our local waters as well as what fish are biting and where. We are all dedicated to customer service.
I extend a warm invitation to the boating world to come and check out our extensively renovated marina. You’ll be impressed. The nautical décor and genuine Southern charm and hospitality will make you want to become a part of our family. We treat all of our customers the same, whether they arrive by yacht or by skiff and it’s never more than a few minutes before our guests realize they already have some new friends. Come see us!
